Conhecidas como pin-up girls ou garotas pin-up a sua história tem suas raízes no final do século XIX. Em sua maioria, eram modelos, atrizes ou simplesmente anônimas atraentes que tiveram a sorte de serem registradas por um artista em desenhos, pinturas e outras ilustrações feitas por imitação a estas fotos. Em pouco tempo, as imagens foram se tornando populares chegando a diversos lugares diferentes. As imagens pin-up podiam ser recortadas de revistas, jornais, cartões postais, cromo-litografias e assim por diante. Tais fotos apareciam frequentemente em calendários os quais eram produzidos para serem pendurados (daí que vem o nome, do verbo em inglês  pin up "pregar") Quando eclodiu a Segunda Guerra Mundial os soldados americanos tinham os seus armários repletas dessas figuras para lembrá-los dos prazeres que deixaram em casa. As figuras de pin-ups foram as mais utilizadas nos aviões durante a guerra e também as mais lembradas. Através dos tempos muitas figuras foram conservadas e deixadas como lembranças e uma das mais memoráveis é do B-17F Memphis Belle, o primeiro bombardeiro que sobreviveu a 25 missões. Muitas musas famosas, como Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth e Betty Garble também eram garotas pin-up. Já para as anônimas uma foto pin-up seria a chance de começar a caminhada até o estrelato.
